President's Message

Summer is upon us which means I just have six months until the end of my Presidency. Our new building at 504 E. Route 66, Glendora, closed escrow the end of May. The Building Task Force is busy getting the city approval on the building plans drawn by the architect. Next step is getting cost estimates for the inside rehab and remodel. Right now our target date for completion is June 2008.

We continue to induct 100 new members a month since the first of the year with no decline in membership. The National Association of REALTORS® announced an increase in their dues for next year. I wanted to bring this to your attention now so you are aware the dues increase is not related to the building costs or declining membership.

I completed CAR Mediation Training in May along with Heidi Burns and Brueslas Gray. In mentioning this, I wanted to remind you the Association offers mediation services and this is often a less expensive way to settle a dispute with more creativity than arbitration or litigation. CVAR has an Ombudsman service in place and available to offer assistance to REALTORS® and members of the public which helps avoid some disputes that otherwise might end up in court. David Brighton, John Hall and Dale Colby have been doing an excellent job the last year and a half and we will be adding additional Ombudsman to help with calls and requests for information. For more information about either CVAR’s mediation or Ombudsmen programs, please call Eleanor at the Association.

I wanted to let you know that sadly the CAR-sponsored SB670 bill concerning Private Transfer Tax was defeated in committee in May. Even though we could not get the legislators behind this issue, this was a huge undertaking by California Association of REALTORS® and a prime example of why we have a REALTOR® Action Fund. The dollars you pay into the fund pay for the lobbying of bills which are critical to protecting property rights. Remember, you can contribute to the REALTOR® Action Fund throughout the year.

June 6th through the 11th , your CAR Directors and I will be in Sacramento for California Association of REALTORS® business meetings and Legislative Day where we visit the legislators who represent the 17 cities of Citrus Valley Association of REALTORS® to address the current issues affecting our business and private property rights. Additionally, there is an Expo where we can check out some of the new technology and business tools for the trade.

Having been in Washington D.C. the middle of May at the National Association of REALTORS® Legislative meeting, I was able to visit with our Federal Legislators about the current issues affecting our business. These are annual events and I find them very stimulating to be able to address the issues in person with our representatives in their own offices.

I’m busy planning a retirement party. For all of you that are not aware, our Eleanor is retiring at the end of this year. She has been our Association Executive for the past 11 years since the merger with Pomona Valley, East San Gabriel Valley and Azusa Glendora Boards. She has been in the business for over 25 years. The search has begun to find a replacement for Eleanor and I will keep you posted on the progress of the search.

Until next month keep busy selling houses, President Linda
